British long-distance swimmer and environmentalist Lewis Pugh swam the entire length of the Hudson River and arrived in Manhattan, New York. He started in mid-August from the river’s source in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State.
On Wednesday, Pugh announced he had arrived. He wrote on Instagram that he will never forget the wild animals such as vultures, beavers and eagles. Pugh traveled a total of about 300 miles to the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean.

Action to protect the seas
With the campaign, the Brit wants to draw attention to the protection of the oceans shortly before the UN General Assembly in New York (from September 18). The Hudson River symbolizes all the world’s rivers, which are “arteries of our planet,” he wrote on Instagram. People have fought for fifty years to clean up this river. Today it is beautiful. If New Yorkers could do this, other rivers could be saved as well, Pugh added.
The post received 1,684 likes and 151 comments (as of Wednesday, September 13, 10:51 PM). In the photo posted by the cocky swimmer, spectators can be seen taking out their cameras and cellphones. The 53-year-old had previously planned to walk about 10 miles a day.
It was not the first high-profile action by the environmental activist. He has already traveled long distances in all the world’s oceans and in 2007 became the first person to swim a long distance at the North Pole.
