One dead, 27 Austrians sick: that is the result of the latest rotten meat scandal. Contaminated kebab meat ended up in Austria. The Vienna Market Office is on the trail of these criminals – with success. The goods from the Großgrünmarkt were actually supposed to give the Viennese population a vitamin boost. The products that have now been removed from circulation would have had a serious impact on people’s stomachs.
Anyone who believed that the culinary danger to the palate, stomach and, in the worst case, even life emanated only from Polish rotten meat, was sadly mistaken. This was evident from a key campaign by the market office at the Liesinger Großgrünmarkt. The hygiene inspectors went out in full force on Monday evening and checked the arriving trucks.
207 trucks checked
And the experts had the right nose – even if they didn’t want it during the inspections. 207 trucks were examined in the “Gammelbomber attack”. The examiners did not have to search for long. For example, a van from a pasta manufacturer from Lower Austria, loaded with 1,650 kilograms of goods, was taken out of service because the temperatures in the hold were too high.
The noodles were destined for Chinese restaurants in Vienna. A spokesperson: “In fact, these should be transported at a maximum of six degrees. This means that the paste becomes a playground for coliform bacteria. We definitely took samples.” The major producer is now under observation.
Vegetables and fruits stewed in their own juice
The cooling system of another truck was defective. The cargo, consisting of pumpkins and kukuruz, was exposed to a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius. This does not matter in the field as fresh products, but here the vegetables and fruit are already stewed in their own juice.
“Without cooling, the fruit will be damaged the next day,” says an expert. A delivery of frozen meat and spring rolls was only transported refrigerated, but not stored in the freezer, thus breaking the cold chain. Three drivers from Poland and Slovakia could not even prove where their cargo came from. All goods became a plea for waste incineration. In any case, as district cooling they still benefit the Viennese.
Do more checks
Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) is pleased: “Thank you to all employees who ensure the high level of food safety in Vienna.” Market office director Andreas Kutheil promises: “Of course we will continue to carry out these checks more intensively in the future.” Because apparently, despite the recent ones, scandals still make some people change their minds.
