Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is convinced that major countries must take responsibility for their own future. Migrants are not the solution for a shrinking population.
A population decline is essentially not fate, but a choice, Meloni continued, according to Italian media. The Prime Minister took part in a “demographic summit” in Budapest (Hungary) on Thursday. Hungary praised it as a positive example of a “determined struggle to defend families, identity and all the things that make up our civilization.”
“There are richer countries where fewer children are born. We must free up resources to support the family, Hungary is a perfect example,” the Italian politician explained. In the country, the government under Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made the necessary decisions and investments to stop the downward trend in the birth rate, increase jobs and thus the labor force participation of women.
“Children make women stronger”
Children would also make women stronger at work, says the 46-year-old, who is herself the mother of a six-year-old daughter. At the same time, she countered that she didn’t have much time to do everything. Migrants could contribute if they were fully integrated, “but we must take more responsibility to ensure that we as citizens find solutions to the crises of the European system.”
The southern Italian island of Lampedusa recently declared a state of emergency as 9,000 migrants have arrived since Monday (see video above). That is almost a third more than the number of inhabitants, which is 6,300. Local priest Carmelo Rizzi reported that the arrivals could no longer find places to sleep or toilets. The police use batons to maintain order.
According to consistent media reports, hundreds of people attempted to leave the port and breach barriers. The police pushed them back. There were chaotic conditions during the food distribution on Wednesday evening. About 3,000 migrants are expected to leave the island again on Thursday.
