Only on Wednesday did the head of the European Commission speak about the enormous importance of decarbonising the economy in the fight against climate change. The next day in Copenhagen, Ursula von der Leyen christened the world’s first container ship powered by green methanol.
The ship of the Danish shipping company Maersk was named Laura Maersk in Copenhagen on Thursday – this is intended to commemorate the first steamship that captain Peter Maersk Møller named Laura at the end of the 19th century. During a ceremony in the port of the Danish capital, meter von der Leyen emphasized the importance of the new container ship outside Europe. Pioneers like Maersk have shaped the economy of the future, according to the Commission President. “This event is a big deal – not just for Europe, but for the whole world.”
She wished the ship and its crew a safe voyage. “May your journeys be smooth and your tasks successful as you navigate the waters of the world,” Von der Leyen said. She then pressed a button, causing a champagne bottle to hit the bow of the ship and the name to be revealed – in the presence of the directors of AP Moller Holding A/S and AP Moller-Maersk.
Shipping is responsible for 3 percent of global CO₂ emissions
Laura Maersk will be followed by 24 others, according to an order from the group. The new ship was assembled at a shipyard in South Korea. The international shipping industry is now responsible for around three percent of global CO₂ emissions – equivalent to more than Germany’s entire emissions.
