Homes evacuated – toxic smoke after explosion at US freight yard

Date:

An explosion in a shipping container at the world’s largest freight yard led to evacuations in the western US state of Nebraska on Thursday evening. The incident caused toxic smoke when a chemical caught fire.

The explosion occurred at the Bailey Yard rail yard, which is located west of the town of North Platte and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). However, it was not clear what caused the explosion, a UP spokeswoman said. No one was injured.

Houses around the explosion site were evacuated
Because of the smoke, authorities evacuated everyone within a radius of about 1,600 meters from the site of the explosion on the west side of the cargo yard, the AP reported. Highway 30 was also closed, the report said.

It was not immediately clear how many homes were evacuated in the largely rural area, which is on the edge of the city of North Platte. The small town is located about 230 miles east of Denver.
