Meeting with Biden – Zelensky visits the White House next week

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also wants to visit the American capital Washington after his planned speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. A meeting is planned for next Thursday with President Joe Biden and members of Congress to reaffirm continued US support for Ukraine, the White House confirmed on Friday.

“It will be the third meeting between the two and it comes at a critical time,” said Biden adviser Jake Sullivan. Biden looks forward to redoubling his support for Ukraine and continuing to lead the world on this issue. Specific dates will be confirmed in the coming days, Sullivan said.

Zelenskiy continues to ask for support
The Ukrainian president will use the visit to seek continued support from the United States for his country in its war against Russia. Biden and his Democrats are currently campaigning for additional aid worth a total of more than 20 billion dollars (about 18.6 billion euros) for military, economic and humanitarian purposes.

In the U.S. Senate, Ukraine has received broad bipartisan support since the war began, but criticism of ongoing aid payments has increased recently in the House of Representatives. The Republicans have a slim majority there.

The US has already sponsored $70 billion
Zelensky last visited Washington in December 2022, meeting Biden and delivering a speech at the Capitol to both houses of Congress. No country supported Ukraine in the war with more money and military aid than the US. The United States has already pledged more than $70 billion, according to the Institute for the World Economy in the northern German city of Kiel.
