No transportation allowed – Surfed with Python – Australian must pay fine

Date:

Sharks might actually be reason enough to worry: In Australia, a surfer south of Brisbane was spotted on his surfboard with a python wrapped around his neck. He now has to pay a hefty fine for this.

Authorities fined the man the equivalent of 1,400 euros. They didn’t mind him keeping the diamond python as a pet. However, he does not have permission to remove the animal from his registered address or even take it surfing.

“Snakes usually avoid water.”
“A separate permit is required to bring or exhibit an animal in public,” according to the Queensland Department of Environment and Science. “Snakes are clearly cold-blooded and although they can swim, reptiles generally avoid water.” The ministry said the water was very cold for the python. “The only snakes allowed in the ocean are sea snakes.”

The surfer Higor Fiuza and his snake Shiva became a media celebrity:

His snake seemed to like the water because it didn’t hiss – something it usually does when it doesn’t like something, the man told Australian broadcaster “9News”.

Diamond pythons are found in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The animals, up to three meters long, are non-venomous and wrap themselves around their prey until it suffocates. The reptiles mainly eat birds, lizards and small mammals.
