Escalation in Berlin – climate activist attacked with gas and stairs

Date:

A climate protest in Berlin completely escalated on Monday morning. A driver’s fuse has blown. He sprayed an activist in the face with gas and tried to ‘kick’ the blockers off the road, police report. The driver is now being investigated for serious bodily injuries.

The organization ‘Last Generation’ had announced numerous protests at traffic intersections in the German capital and carried out this threat. These include the Große Stern and Ernst-Reuter-Platz, the Hallesche Ufer, the Tempelhof S-Bahn station, as well as the Prenzlauer Allee and Kastanienallee, as German media reported. According to the activists, about thirty sit-ins took place.

Some roads needed to be repaired
It sometimes took the police several hours to remove the blockages. According to the driver, getting stuck at seven intersections could be prevented because officers arrived early. Even after the trapped activists were removed, there were still some delays. “The road is damaged in some places and still needs to be repaired,” police said. An officer suffered a minor hand injury during an operation. Some drivers reacted very aggressively due to the delay and tried to clear the blockages themselves.

Police warns: “Do not intervene”
An incident in Prenzlauer Berg was particularly dramatic: a driver attacked blockers with gas and pedals (see video in the post above). The incident was filmed – police said they would review these recordings. In Spandau, officials also had to arrest a driver who tried to force climate demonstrators off the road. The director warned on Platform X: “We understand if you are annoyed by the protests, but please do not intervene or even use violence. Our colleague. “Come as soon as possible,” the police promised.

“Particularly persistent adhesive mixtures” are used
A police spokesperson explained that according to ‘Bild’, 500 emergency services were on the road in Berlin all day to intervene quickly and consistently. In some cases it took up to two hours to remove the activists’ hands from the asphalt; the police spoke of “particularly persistent adhesive mixtures” that significantly delayed work at some intersections. The result was long traffic jams and waiting times.
