The shooting of wolves, ordered by the South Tyrolean state government, will have to wait for the time being. The Bolzano Administrative Court has temporarily suspended two so-called “revocation permits,” the state reported. The shootings were disputed by animal rights activists. We are now waiting for legal clarification.
State Governor Arno Kompatscher and his responsible State Councilor Arnold Schuler (both SVP) take note of the court’s decision “with regret.” They argued that the fast-growing wolf population poses an “acute danger to farm animals and thus to traditional alpine and mountain agriculture.” A shoot-down is therefore “urgently necessary”. The state’s legal profession will defend the revocation permit in court.
The wolf population must be secured
Last weekend Kompatscher signed such an authorization for two wolves in the area around Mühlwald. Last Friday there was another one for Kastelbell. The state justified the measures with the safe wolf population in South Tyrol and the livestock losses in the affected areas.
