To defend itself against Russian invaders, Ukraine remains dependent on significant arms supplies from abroad. Germany would like to supply 100 older Leopard 1 main battle tanks – but Ukraine is unlikely to be particularly happy about this – some tanks are simply in too much need of repair.
According to a “Spiegel” report, there are significant problems with the supply of German Leopard tanks to Ukraine. Accordingly, Kiev has already refused to take over ten Leopard 1A5 tanks.
Tank too worn out from training
Experts from the German Ministry of Defense discovered that during the training of Ukrainian soldiers in Germany, the tanks were so worn that they needed to be repaired.
It is also said that several of the Leopard 1A5 tanks transferred to Ukraine in July failed there due to similar problems.
Model has been retired for 20 years
The Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the report at the request of the German press agency. The tanks, taken from industrial stocks and repaired by the defense companies, were the first installments of a planned large-scale delivery.
In February, the German federal government agreed to deliver 100 older Leopard 1 main battle tanks to Ukraine. Twenty years ago, the Bundeswehr retired its last Leopard 1.
