A study commissioned by the British Guardian reveals alarming figures: 98 percent of people live in areas with very harmful particulate matter levels that exceed World Health Organization guidelines.
Nearly two-thirds of people live in areas where pollution levels are more than twice the WHO guidelines. The worst affected country in Europe is North Macedonia. Nearly two-thirds of people live in areas where air pollution is more than four times higher than WHO guidelines.
400,000 deaths annually
According to experts, 400,000 deaths per year are due to this health risk. Air pollution also has a negative effect on organs, leading to heart and lung disease, cancer, diabetes, depression and mental illness. Another study shows that one million stillbirths per year are caused by toxic air. “This is a serious public health crisis,” says study leader Roel Vermeulen, professor of environmental epidemiology.
