Not enough money – “Without Caritas I wouldn’t even have a stove”

Date:

Poverty in our country is increasing. More and more people depend on financial support to make ends meet. A victim from Burgenland talks about her personal fate.

She never thought she wouldn’t have enough money to live on when she was old. However, recent inflation has forced Eisenstadt’s Rosemarie Müller to seek help.

Moved to Eisenstadt
“I could no longer do my job for health reasons and I retired,” says the former nurse. At first she lived in a small village. “But because of the bad infrastructure I moved to Eisenstadt.”

Only for this the pensioner had to take out a small loan. But there wasn’t even a kitchenette in the apartment: “It took a lot of effort to ask for help. Caritas eventually financed a stove for me, otherwise I wouldn’t even be able to cook,” says the 74-year-old.

New offer
Such a fate no longer stands alone, Caritas president Melanie Balaskovics also knows: “In the first four months of this year alone, twice as many people visited our social services as in the same period last year.” To take the embarrassment of those affected, Caritas has launched an online service: “You can get information quickly, free of charge and above all anonymously at www.caritas.at/hilfe-angebote.”
