The Crimean peninsula, which was illegally annexed by Russia, was again the target of an attack on Friday. After Russia already reported a missile attack on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet, Kiev confirmed a few hours later a “successful attack on temporarily occupied Sevastopol.”
The headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet in the port city of Sevastopol was badly damaged in the attack. Sevastopol’s governor said early Friday afternoon that firefighting efforts were currently underway.
Russian soldier killed
“According to available information, one soldier was killed,” said a statement from the Defense Ministry in Moscow. According to Crimea Governor Sergei Aksyonov, Russia’s air defense system shot down several cruise missiles over the peninsula.
Kiev: “Attack in temporarily occupied Sevastopol”
“On September 22, around 12 noon, the Ukrainian armed forces carried out a successful attack on the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in temporarily occupied Sevastopol,” the Ukrainian Army press staff said. He thus confirmed the report of the occupying governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvoshayev, who had spoken of a rocket attack by the “enemies” on the base.
Russian authorities warned that more attacks could occur. “Don’t come to the city center, stay in the buildings,” Razvoshayev advised on his Telegram channel. People near the naval headquarters were advised to seek shelter.
The Lunacharsky Theater was reportedly damaged in an attack. Although the public was asked not to share photos or videos of the event on social media, numerous images were shared showing the aftermath of the attack.
Another heavy blow in the series of attacks on Crimea
The opposition Telegram channel Crimeanwind reported several serious explosions, citing eyewitnesses. The attack represents another serious blow to Russian forces in Crimea; Ukraine previously managed to neutralize a Russian landing craft and a submarine in Sevastopol Bay.
Sevastopol on the peninsula annexed by Russia since 2014 is the base of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Ships from this fleet regularly fire missiles into Ukrainian territory.
Injured in Russian rocket attacks in eastern Ukraine
According to official information, sixteen people were injured on Friday evening in Russian rocket attacks on the city of Kurakhove in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. “At 10 p.m., the Russians shelled a residential area in the city of Kurakhove,” the local prosecutor’s office said. The attack is believed to have been carried out with two Iskander missiles and destroyed a two-storey residential building.
The surrounding buildings were also damaged. Rescue and search efforts in the rubble are still ongoing. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the injured, six women and ten men, are between 43 and 82 years old.
Meanwhile, in Kherson region, a woman was found dead under the rubble of her home. According to a Telegram message from Kherson Governor Alexander Prokudin, the Russian attack targeted the city of Zelenivka.
