According to consistent reports in the US media, the United States could soon supply Ukraine with longer-range ATACMS missiles. Kiev has been asking US President Joe Biden for the weapon system for over a year – which would open new possibilities for Ukrainian forces.
The US government will soon supply the long-range missiles requested by Kiev to defend itself in Russia’s war of aggression, the Washington Post and US broadcaster NBC News reported on Friday, citing several sources familiar with the matter.
Cluster munitions instead of individual warheads
According to the Washington Post, it is an ATACMS variant that can be equipped with cluster munitions. NBC News reported that US President Joe Biden had already promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the prospect of delivering “a small number” of ATACMS – “Army Tactical Missile System” – during his visit to Washington on Thursday.
Ukraine has long demanded ATACMS missiles from Lockheed Martin with a range of up to 300 kilometers. They are fired from the ground at targets on the ground and hit very precisely. Newer models can be driven, older ones cannot.
Will Germany follow suit?
Due to their range, they are often compared to the German Taurus martian bodies, which Kiev also requests. The Taurus cruise missiles are capable of destroying bunkers and protected command posts up to 500 kilometers away. It is entirely possible that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will now also abandon his blockade position, as he has already focused on US supplies in the past.
With both weapon systems, there is concern that targets in Russia could also be attacked. However, Kiev rejects this as unfounded. In addition to ATACMS and Taurus, the weapons with a range of hundreds of kilometers also include the Storm Shadow and Scalp cruise missiles, which Kiev received from Great Britain and France.
