Two little puppies died in the home of a 33-year-old man. And all this within a few weeks. He is now in the dock for the death of one of the small Maltese dogs. In addition to a fine, he is also sentenced to a suspended prison sentence.
Maltese puppy “Teddy” was just a few weeks old when his owner found him bleeding and foaming at the mouth in his basket. Four days earlier, the dog had tripped over the stairs in the 33-year-old’s home and hit its head on the railing.
“Similar injuries to a shaken baby”
But the injuries the animal sustained during the autopsy do not match this description. Several broken ribs, a lung and skull hemorrhage were found. “These are similar injuries that also occur in shaken babies,” says a veterinarian at the Vienna Regional Court.
The defendant maintains that the new fractures and internal bleeding were caused during an attempt at resuscitation. But that doesn’t match. The prosecutor puts it in a nutshell: “If that were the case, there would no longer be any injuries that warrant resuscitation.” It would be clear that the man must have used violence against the dog – in some form or another.
“Milo” also died under his care
“Teddy” was not the defendant’s first puppy. “It is a strange coincidence that two Maltese puppies die within a few weeks of each other,” the judge said skeptically. A month earlier he took “Milo” with him, who only lived a short time. However, this is not the subject of the animal cruelty charge.
The suspect cannot explain what exactly happened to his second puppy: “Of course I did not abuse him. He was supposed to be a surprise for my family.” But they never saw the animal; it only lived with the 33-year-old for eight days.
Suspended prison sentence for ‘puppy killer’
However, an expert report shows that there was violence. The expert in court: “If I look at it this way, I would say that this dog was abused to death.” The judge follows up: “I believe they were simply overwhelmed and didn’t seem to be the bad puppy in the front “I wanted to look like a murderer.” The defendant receives a suspended sentence of four months and a fine of 940 euros – not legally binding.
