On Thursday, EU interior ministers gave their political blessing to the European Commission’s proposal to provide longer protection in the EU to those displaced from Ukraine by Russia’s war of aggression. Following the political agreement, the Council must formally adopt the decision to extend temporary protection.
The temporary protected status will be extended until March 3, 2025. According to Eurostat, as of July 31, 2023, 4.1 million people have found protection and support in the EU, many also in Austria.
Emergency mechanism activated after aggressive war
The EU activated a temporary protection directive in March 2022, shortly after Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began. Brussels can use this emergency mechanism in the event of an exceptionally massive influx. This means that displaced persons are given protection status quickly and unbureaucratically. The mechanism was originally valid for one year, but has now been extended until March 4, 2024.
The Commission considers that the reasons for the temporary protection remain and that a further extension is necessary and appropriate. The directive enables the enjoyment of certain rights in the EU, including the right to residence, housing, social benefits, medical care and other assistance, and access to the labor market.
It is also intended to help prevent national asylum systems from being overwhelmed and help states better manage people’s entry.
