During a family argument, the man attacked the 63-year-old in Herzogenburg with a kitchen knife. During the attempted murder trial, he pleaded not guilty at the St. Pölten Regional Court. Now the surprise after a turbulent day of negotiations: the Turk received a six-month suspended prison sentence for negligent bodily harm and coercion.
About twenty family members and a prayerful mother looked visibly tense on Friday at the attempted murder trial of a 35-year-old father in St. Pölten. The Turk is said to have stabbed his father-in-law with a kitchen knife during an argument in Herzogenburg in mid-May, seriously injuring him.
After some uncertainty, he pleaded guilty in court to only one charge: attempted coercion.
Big gaps in memory
The later victim ‘intervened’ several times in an argument between the suspect and his wife. To force his father-in-law out of the house, the 35-year-old took a knife from the kitchen. In the ensuing struggle, it “somehow” lodged in the 63-year-old’s chest, leaving the suspect in court with large gaps in his memory of the time of the crime.
That’s why he quickly presented “version number four,” as the judge noted in disbelief. His father-in-law allegedly woke him up with punches and kicks. The 35-year-old then “defended himself”. “It was an accident, or rather an accident,” said the father of the family. It just happened in the ‘heat of the moment’. His wife described the events differently, but the victim refused to testify during the trial.
Don’t judge definitively
Ultimately, the defendant was given a six-month suspended prison sentence for negligence and coercion – which was not legally binding. The Turk left the courtroom a free man.
