Extreme heat – More than 100 river dolphins died in Brazil

Date:

More than a hundred dead freshwater dolphins have been discovered in the Brazilian Amazon. The exact cause of death has yet to be determined. It can be assumed that there is a connection with the current heat and drought in the region, according to the Mamirauá research institute.

Water temperatures of more than 39 degrees Celsius were recently measured in Lago Tefé – the lake where the dolphins were discovered. The Amazon region is currently experiencing high temperatures and severe drought. Many rivers in the region transport significantly less water than the average of previous years. The climate phenomenon El Niño further intensifies the usual drought.

A lot of stress for animals
The dead dolphins were discovered last week. They are the largest river dolphins: they grow to about two to 2.5 meters in height and weigh between 85 and 185 kilograms.

“Amazon river dolphins face many pressures, such as the effects of hydroelectric dams, mercury pollution and conflict with humans. Now these small freshwater dolphins are even more directly affected by the climate problem,” says Mariana Paschoalini Frias of the environmental organization WWF.

She called for “immediate effective protective measures” and more long-term research into climate change. It is necessary to find out how the deterioration of wetlands can be prevented.
