Cause of accident unclear – five seriously injured in violent head-on collision

Date:

A terrible accident occurred on Saturday in the Swiss municipality of Maienfeld (canton Graubünden), bordering Vorarlberg. A car carrying four young men entered the oncoming lane while making a right bend and collided head-on with an oncoming van.

Around 7:25 a.m., a 20-year-old drove his red car from Luziensteig towards the Heidi community of Maienfeld. In addition to the young man, a man of the same age and two 21-year-olds were in the car. At the intersection to the ranger school, the young driver ended up in the opposite lane during a right bend, according to the Graubünden cantonal police, for reasons that have not yet been explained. There was then a violent head-on collision with an oncoming truck.

Two emergency medical helicopters on site
Both vehicles were thrown off the road and came to a stop completely damaged at the edge of the forest. The emergency services were immediately alerted and arrived with three ambulances and two helicopters. The crew of the Swiss air rescue service “Rega” and the team of the AAA Alpine Air Ambulance each transported a seriously injured person to the University Hospital in Zurich and the Cantonal Hospital in St. Gallen respectively. The other three were taken by ambulance to the hospitals in Schiers, Chur and Grabs.

The Public Prosecution Service and the Graubünden cantonal police are investigating the precise circumstances that led to this traffic accident.
