During the day you don’t notice that it has already been autumn for a week; the warmest September since records began is currently being followed by an equally unusual October. It could reach 29 degrees in the coming days. For all the pleasure of leaving the jacket in the box, there is also a sense of concern. Because: What could that mean in view of the extreme weather year of 2023?
With a temperature deviation of more than three degrees Celsius on average, September reached the highest point in Austrian measurement history – 257 years after all. Regionally, the deviation was even greater: in Vorarlberg and North Tyrol, in the east of Upper Austria, in Lower Austria, Vienna and the north of Burgenland, September was 3.5 to 4.5 degrees too warm and even in the mountains up to 4.8 degrees. If you take the October, November and December averages from previous years, the entire year of 2023 will probably go down as one of the three warmest in Austrian history. Not necessarily good news…
