Response to the attack – The Turkish military carried out airstrikes in northern Iraq

Date:

A few hours after the bombing of Ankara, the Turkish army carried out air strikes in northern Iraq. The Ministry of Defense announced this on Sunday evening. “A large number of terrorists were neutralized.”

The attacks targeted the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and other “terrorist elements,” the report said. The ministry invoked the right to self-defense. The PKK has its headquarters in the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq. As reported, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suddenly threatened to attack Iraq or Syria on Sunday. The Kurdish party PKK is said to be behind the bombing in Ankara (see video above).

Decades of conflict
These words were quickly followed by action. The conflict between the PKK and the Turkish state has been going on for decades. Thousands of people have been murdered since then. The Turkish government regularly orders military operations in northern Iraq and Syria. The PKK in turn carries out attacks on Turkish security forces. But civilians also die again and again.

Turkey accuses the PKK of endangering national security and unity through terror. The PKK states that it fights, among other things, for the ‘rights of the Kurds’ and against oppression. In 2015, a peace process between Türkiye and the PKK failed.

As reported, an attacker blew himself up in front of the Turkish Interior Ministry on Sunday morning. Another attacker was reportedly shot dead by police officers. In the evening, a news agency distributed an alleged letter of responsibility from the PKK.
