NGO funding: – Meloni intervenes in the asylum dispute with Germany

Date:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni indirectly criticizes German support for NGOs active in the Mediterranean. The fight against illegal migration is a “difficult task” that “with patience and determination can yield concrete results,” the head of government wrote on Facebook on Monday.

“Of course, everything will be much more difficult if other states work in the diametrically opposite direction in the meantime,” Meloni said.

Berlin supports NGOs in the Mediterranean
The Foreign Ministry in Berlin confirmed last week that it is financially supporting the aid organizations SOS Humanity and Sea Eye, which are active in the Mediterranean. The Italian Catholic Basic Community of Sant’Egidio also receives funding from the German government.

“Due to the unstable situation in large parts of Africa and the Middle East, we are confronted with unprecedented migration pressure. “The Italian government is working every day to control this situation and combat massive illegal immigration,” Meloni wrote.

“Stop the departure of tugboats”
“We are doing this seriously at all levels: by involving the other European states and concluding agreements with African countries to stop the departure of smugglers and destroy the network of human traffickers. And with sensible regulations to make it easier to deport those who have no right to be sheltered,” the head of government emphasized.

“We will continue to do what is necessary to defend the legality and borders of the Italian state. “Without fear,” assured the right-wing populist.

“Scholz blocked”
On Sunday, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto criticized the migration policy of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He wants, among other things, to continue the additional border security measures with Austria. “Scholz blocks Germany’s eastern borders for migrants, but makes it easier for them to arrive in Italy by financing the NGOs active in the central Mediterranean,” Crosetto said on Twitter on Sunday (X).

The German strategy is “coherent and brilliant,” the minister criticized from the ranks of the right-wing party Fratelli d’Italia (FdI/Brothers of Italy). Rome considers it interference in its internal affairs that the German government also wants to support aid organizations that receive migrants on Italian soil.
