At least 38 people were injured in a major fire in a high-rise building in the Egyptian city of Ismailia, according to media reports. On Monday morning, a fire broke out at the headquarters of the Security Directorate. The multi-storey building is one of the tallest in the city, located on the Suez Canal and staffed by soldiers 24 hours a day. According to media reports, most of the injured have been taken to hospitals with breathing problems.
Images in local media showed smoke rising from the building, which was completely covered in soot. According to state media reports, the Ministry of Health sent 50 ambulances and two planes to the accident site. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.
Fire safety regulations are often not adhered to
Deadly fires are not uncommon in Egypt. In the North African country, fire safety regulations are rarely implemented and it often takes a long time for emergency services to arrive at the scene of a fire. A fire at a church in a busy alley in the capital Cairo killed 41 people in August 2022. In 2021, twenty people died in a fire at a textile factory on the outskirts of Cairo.
