Students in Great Britain will no longer be allowed to take mobile phones to class in the future. The conservative government announced on Monday that it wanted to use the ban to prevent distractions, disruptions and bullying. The French government had previously announced that it would confiscate the mobile phones of bullying students in the future.
“One of the biggest issues facing children and teachers today is the impact of smartphones on our schools,” British Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said at the Conservative Party’s annual meeting in Manchester. We know that teachers are struggling with the consequences and need support. Because changing the law takes time, only new guidelines may be issued initially.
So far, school principals have decided against the use of mobile phones in their schools, and in most schools the phones must be put away before classes start. The planned changes should only apply to state schools, not private schools.
Criticism from the teachers union
The teachers’ union NASUWT expressed criticism. The planned ban is “unenforceable” and ineffective, boss Patrick Roach said. Help for parents and teachers would be more important because the negative consequences of prolonged smartphone use are not limited to the classroom. The association of school directors recalled practical problems, such as agreements between children and their parents.
The Tories announced a ban on mobile phones two years ago, but so far no action has been taken. Just a few days ago, the French government announced it would take away cell phones from students who bully others. In addition, they should be temporarily blocked from online networks such as Facebook and Instagram.
