Austria has so far provided protection from the war to 78,345 refugees from Ukraine (as of August 31). This is evident from the current figures from statistical agency Eurostat. In total, more than 4.1 million Ukrainians have reached the EU so far.
The number of Ukrainians who fled to the EU because of the war increased again within the EU in August. On August 31, 4.15 million people from the country were under temporary protection from the Union, statistics agency Eurostat announced on Friday.
Germany with the highest growth rates
Compared to July, 41,275 refugees have arrived. In total, the most protection was found in Germany (28 percent), Poland (23 percent) and the Czech Republic (9 percent).
In August, 1,440 Ukrainians came to Austria
The most additional admissions in August were in Germany (+21,830), the Czech Republic (+7,545) and the Netherlands (+2,635). However, there were fewer in Poland (-10,530), Italy (-550) and France (-420). 1,440 people arrived in Austria in August. A total of 78,345 refugees from the country received protection in this country.
At the end of August, 9.3 people for every thousand inhabitants in the EU sought protection from Ukraine. This share was significantly higher in the Czech Republic (33.7), Estonia (26.2), Poland (26.1), Bulgaria (25.6) and Lithuania (25.3).
The vast majority are women and children
Ukrainians make up 98 percent of all those receiving temporary protection. The vast majority of them are women and children (over 80 percent). Eurostat statistics count all non-EU citizens who have fled the war in Ukraine. 98.2 percent of them are Ukrainians, plus a small percentage of Russians, Nigerians and Azerbaijanis.
Ukrainians: protection status in the EU extended until March 3, 2025
A week ago, EU Home Affairs Ministers politically approved the European Commission’s proposal to provide longer protection in the EU to those displaced from Ukraine by Russia’s war of aggression. The temporary protected status is extended until March 3, 2025.
