In Israel, the opposition party of former Defense Minister Benny Gantz is calling for new elections. Gantz, who is part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war cabinet, proposed a vote in parliament on Thursday to dissolve it. It is unclear whether a majority can be achieved in new elections.
Gantz had given Netanyahu an ultimatum on June 8 to present a plan for what to do after the war in Gaza ended. Otherwise he would leave the war coalition. Gantz joined the government after the October 7 massacre by the radical Islamist Hamas in Israel.
In an initial response, Netanyahu’s Likud party said Israel needs unity now and that dissolving the government would harm the war’s objectives. She had made similar statements in the past.
Israeli government controversial
Since December 2022, Netanyahu has headed a government made up of his Likud party and allied religious fundamentalists and right-wing nationalists. After the elections, there were large demonstrations in the country for months because Netanyahu – who himself was tried on corruption charges – wanted to weaken the judiciary.
However, after Hamas’s attack on Israel, these issues faded into the background. Netanyahu has shaped the fate of Israeli politics for decades and first headed the government in 1996.
