The Spanish coast guard on Friday rescued 252 migrants who had tried to reach the Canary Islands in three boats. The number of migrants arriving in Spain by sea has increased sharply. Many refugees also arrived in the Mediterranean.
They were picked up by the coast guard in the Atlantic Ocean and dispersed across three of the islands. Spain and Italy have repeatedly expressed concern about the increase in illegal immigration to their islands in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean.
The number of migrants arriving in Spain by sea has increased by a fifth this year compared to last year. Spain has said it cannot handle the situation without help from the European Union.
“Geo Barentsz” saved 258 people in the Mediterranean Sea
However, 258 people were rescued in the Mediterranean on Friday by the rescue ship “Geo Barents” in the central Mediterranean. Italian authorities have assigned the ship to the southern Italian port of Salerno for landing. The migrants, including women and children, traveled on two wooden boats that were not suitable for navigation. The rescue took place in the early morning hours.
