The EU adopts the Grenada Declaration without including migration via Poland and Hungary

Poland and Hungary’s opposition to the European Union (EU) pact on migration and asylum has prevented the adoption at the informal summit in Grenada of a final declaration on migration, supported by all Member States and, instead, by the President of the European Union. Council, Charles Michelhas published his own text on that subject.

However, the leaders of the twenty-seven member states adopted a joint declaration at today’s informal summit in the Andalusian city on the remaining issues under discussion – EU enlargement and Europe’s strategic autonomy.

The migration debate in Grenada took place after the countries of the European Union reached agreement on Wednesday on the Crisis Regulation, the last part of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum on which the States had not yet agreed. This marks the end of the reform that the EU started preparing four years ago.

To implement this agreement between the member states, the unanimity of all countries was not necessary. Poland and Hungary voted against and in recent months have criticized the fact that decisions on migration between EU countries are taken by qualified majority rather than unanimity.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán today criticized in Granada that the European Union has “violated” and “forced” Hungary and Poland to accept the recent agreements on the Migration and Asylum Pact, as they were adopted without his approval.

After the countries agree, it will be necessary to negotiate with the European Parliament, the co-legislator of the EU and the Member States, to reach a final agreement on the immigration legislation package so that it is adopted and can enter into force .
