A 60-year-old driver from Hermagor (Carinthia) wanted to drive his unloaded truck from a gas station onto Gailtalstraße on Friday morning. He had apparently overlooked two pedestrians: an 82-year-old and his 75-year-old wife from Germany. The 82-year-old pedestrian fell under the wheels of the truck and suffered fatal injuries.
There must have been seconds of fear when the truck driver from Hermagor overlooked the two pensioners as he turned onto Gailtal Street. The vehicle hit the Berliner (82) and his wife (75). All help came too late for the German. Miraculously, his wife was only slightly injured. She had to be taken to the LKH Villach by the RK 1 rescue helicopter team.
The driver of the accident went into shock
“The driver initially did not notice the accident. He was arrested immediately afterwards and suffered shock,” the Carinthian police said.
Numerous rescue workers and ambulance personnel, the rescue helicopter RK 1, road maintenance workers and several police patrols were present. Gailtalstrasse was closed for about an hour and a half during the operation and investigation.
