The annual national pilot alarm for Civil Defense took place on Saturday afternoon between 12:00 and 12:45. And it ended with flying colors: 99.4 percent of the 8,311 sirens worked perfectly.
The three civil defense signals “Warning”, “Alarm” and “All clear” were broadcast throughout Austria at 12 noon on Saturday after the “Siren Probe” signal. As every year, the test alarm serves on the one hand to check the technical equipment of the warning and alarm system and on the other hand the aim is for the population to become familiar with these signals and their meaning.
Vienna tested 180 sirens
“Austria has a comprehensive warning and alarm system managed by the Ministry of the Interior together with the offices of the state governments. This means that Austria is one of the few countries with a comprehensive siren warning system,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.
This year, a total of 8,311 sirens were tested for functionality, with 99.4 percent (8,259 sirens) working perfectly. Of the 180 sirens tested in Vienna, only one failed. The functionality in Vienna is 99.4 percent.
