Ten years after Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, the Australian government has called for “truth, justice and accountability for the atrocities” (see video above). Russia must be held responsible for the deaths of the nearly 300 people on board.
Flight MH17 was hit by a missile over eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur and crashed. All 298 passengers were killed, including 39 from Australia.
A commemorative ceremony was held in Canberra on Wednesday to mark the anniversary. “I reaffirm our shared commitment to truth, justice and accountability for the atrocities of 17 July 2014,” Foreign Minister Penny Wong said.
Life imprisonment for three responsible
In November 2022, two Russians and a Ukrainian were found guilty in the Netherlands and sentenced to life imprisonment. A court found it proven that the plane was shot down by a Russian surface-to-air missile. It came from a Russian military base and was fired from a field in Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine. To this day, the Russian authorities deny any guilt.
