A micro-sleep in the early morning hours on Saturday was fatal for a truck driver on the Tyrolean Brenner highway: the 53-year-old Moroccan dozed off behind the wheel, after which the truck rammed into several construction fences and concrete barriers. The driver had to be taken to hospital with injuries.
The serious accident happened shortly before 5 a.m. The 53-year-old Moroccan was driving a truck on the A13 towards Italy when he fell asleep at the wheel between Matrei am Brenner and Steinach. This caused the truck to collide with full force against the construction site equipment.
Injured driver taken to hospital
Several guide beacons, construction fences and concrete barriers were destroyed – and the truck itself also suffered extensive damage. The 53-year-old driver was injured – after first aid he was taken by ambulance to Hall State Hospital.
Truck backlog to Schönberg
During the clearing work, a backlog of trucks arose as far as Schönberg. The work was completed around 6:45 a.m. and all lanes were open to traffic again.
