The Council of the Russian Federation, the Upper House of Parliament, unanimously approved on Tuesday the annexation to Russia of the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, partly occupied by Russian forces in the context of the invasion that was launched on February 24. unleashed. .

The senators’ decision came in a plenary session just one day after the State Duma, the lower house, also unanimously ratified this annexation, which was approved last week by Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Russia’s TASS news agency.

The treaties ratified by the Russian parliament define the borders of these regions and envisage that the regions concerned become republics -in the case of Donetsk and Lugansk- and regions -in the case of Kherson and Zaporizhia-, all with government leaders receive governor status.

Putin, in particular, will appoint the governors of the four regions in eastern Ukraine over the next ten days. Also, regional governments will be formed in accordance with current Russian law.

Both Ukraine and the international community have rejected Putin’s announcement, insisting that both the annexation and referendums held in these occupied territories days earlier have no legitimacy under international law.
