At least 91 people were killed and 100 injured when a suspension bridge over a river collapsed in the western Indian state of Gujarat, according to local medical sources to the Times of India.
Over the Machchhu River, the Morbi Suspension Bridge was a historic structure that was restored and reopened to the public just four days ago for the New Year celebrations in Gujarati.
According to media witnesses, some 500 people, including women and children, were crossing the bridge when it collapsed.
According to the same sources, dozens of people have been submerged and several more may be trapped under the rubble.
The country’s opposition has attributed the accident to the ruling party, Bharatiya Hanata (BJP), has called for a commission of inquiry and has assured that the bridge did not have a municipal authorization necessary for reopening.
