On Friday evening, a tragic accident took place on the east side of Watzmann: a 42-year-old Czech fell about 80 meters into the depths and died.
Together with a second Czech, the climber set off on the Watzmann east face on Friday morning. The two climbed the so-called ramp at an altitude of almost 1,900 meters, without having set up intermediate belays. Just when they thought they were back on track, the leader fell for unknown reasons. His companion put the rope around a rock head. Despite the measure, the Czech fell about 80 meters on the rocky area and suffered serious head injuries. The companion immediately made a distress call.
The victim was not found until the next day
Even in the evening light, the rescue helicopter Christoph 14 flew a mountain rescue worker to the scene of the accident. However, due to darkness, the rescue helicopter soon had to leave again and the Berchtesgaden mountain rescue service helped with an Austrian rescue helicopter that could fly at night. However, the emergency doctor was only able to confirm the death of the fallen person, who could no longer be saved due to the darkness.
It was not until around 8 a.m. on Saturday morning that a police helicopter flew two police mountain guides and a mountain rescue officer to the eastern side of Watzmann to rescue the dead man. A mountain guide from the police is investigating the circumstances of the accident.
