It’s hard to believe: a prisoner (51) with a huge criminal record – who has been serving a 15-year prison sentence for aggravated robbery in Graz-Karlau prison since 2011 – took advantage of a release to escape this spring. Actually, as discussed, he had an appointment with the dentist, but instead he went to Vienna to commit robberies with a Stanley knife in the federal capital. On Monday, a jury at the Vienna Regional Court presented him with the bill: 16 years in prison.
The 51-year-old – whose handcuffs first clicked at the age of 16 – was actually supposed to go to the dentist on May 24. Instead of keeping his appointment, he went to Vienna. Until his arrest on June 8, he committed four robberies, although in two cases they were attempts: one woman he wanted to rob in an elevator was able to escape, and another was unimpressed by the 51-year-old. During this period, the man managed to steal approximately 270 euros and a mobile phone.
Drug addiction is the cause of everything
‘I had to get money. “I had no plan to get money,” the defendant initially described to a jury in perfect standard German. That is why he “spontaneously decided to make a woman (to rob, note)”. His drug addiction is the cause of everything: “I was heavily addicted to drugs. “If you’re a serious drug addict and you don’t have drugs, you need something.”
“You have been in the port for over ten years. How is it possible that you are so dependent on that?” the chairman wondered. “The justice system put a complete junkie in my cell,” the defendant replied. He “injected himself with something every day. And after a few days I can’t watch it anymore. I relapsed again.” The 51-year-old accepted the prison sentence imposed on him. The public prosecutor has not made a statement. The judgment is therefore not legally binding.
