Rederas, neskatillas and packers can raise retirement age by four years

Women of the sea, ship owners, neskatillas and packers will be able to raise their retirement age by four years, Radio Euskadi reports. This is reflected in the new fisheries law approved by the Spanish government this week. In this way, an old demand of the sector is recognized that PNV and EH Bildu have defended for years in Madrid.

The draft new Fisheries Act includes a corrective coefficient for the minimum age to receive the pension, allowing netters, neskatillas and packers to retire four years earlier than what would normally be.

The netwomen repair the stuff in the harbor; the neskatillas were responsible for unloading and cleaning the catches, while the packers were responsible for classifying the fish.

The text of the bill recognizes for the first time social protection for these especially heavy professions which are a great wear.

This question reached the Senate plenary on Wednesday, where it was unanimously approved EH Bildu Initiative to recognize the professional work of these groups.

Both the coalition and the PNV had repeatedly called on the Spanish government to enact laws to resolve this anomaly and the discrimination against women of the sea.

The inclusion of this issue in the new fisheries law was something that the Minister of Social Security, José Luis Escrivá, had recently committed to.

The senator of EH Bildu, Idurre Bidegurenhas described on the social network Twitter what was approved as “an historic achievement after decades of unfulfilled promises”.
