There is an ominous calm in Tel Aviv, but fear is omnipresent. Mattis Körber, a German holidaymaker on site, reports an oppressive silence on the street, which is usually full of life. Tel Aviv’s seaside promenade, a popular meeting place for locals and tourists, lies deserted and deserted. People have become quiet, cafes and restaurants have closed their doors.
The sudden rocket attack on Saturday morning took the residents of Tel Aviv completely by surprise. The alarm sounded just as the clock struck eight and within seconds all hell broke loose. Iron Dome, Israel’s missile defense system, is used to combat the incoming projectiles.
“The warning system installed in Israel works surprisingly well. Once the alarm goes off, people have about 90 seconds to flee to safety. In many cases, this means barricading yourself in reinforced stairwells or bunkers,” says Mattis. A short period decides between life and death.
“Children are crying, tourists are scared and normality is still far away,” says Mattis. Even those familiar with regular conflict believe that this escalation is different, more dangerous and more frightening.
