While new car registrations fell in September, truck registrations are rising. While motorcycles and petrol-electric hybrids are in high demand, diesel engines, petrol engines and electric cars are in decline.
Although new car registrations increased significantly by 12.1 percent year-on-year to 182,886 new vehicles between January and September, September still saw a setback. With 19,840 registered new cars, 4.3 percent fewer were registered than a year ago. In the truck weight classes N1 and N2 there was an increase of 59 percent (to 3.5 and 12 tonnes total weight respectively), but this is also due to tax changes in September of the previous year.
Boom in motorcycles
But there was also an increase of 17.4 percent for semi-trailer tractors, which are mainly used in transit traffic. On the other hand, farmers were cautious in September, with tractor sales falling 20.7 percent.
And the boom in mobile homes was also over in September: minus 8.8 percent in new registrations on an annual basis. Motorcycles are selling like hotcakes: an increase of 11 percent for new bicycles. A total of 27,820 vehicles were newly registered, an increase of 1.2 percent compared to September 2022.
Gasoline-electric hybrids are very popular
Also in September there was little reason for diesel engine enthusiasts to be happy: the number of registrations fell by 21.3 percent, while petrol engines fell by 13.4 percent. But there is also a lull in pure electric vehicles: registrations fell by 6.5 percent.
On the other hand, gasoline-electric hybrids are booming with a 33 percent increase, while diesel hybrids grew 9.4 percent. It is striking that electric vehicles overtook diesel registrations for the fifth time in a row in September; this was last the case the month before.
