Ongoing training is mandatory for Vienna’s rescuers in rope technology, including the Ferris wheel. The ‘crown’ took part in the exercise and learned that in extreme situations the brain is more important than any muscles.
When the sun rises and the Ferris wheel stands still… it is perfect as a giant training session for the rope technology task force (STEG) of the Vienna Professional Rescue Service. Once a month, the height and depth rescue specialists practice at unusual locations in Vienna to be prepared for all possible operational scenarios.
“Rescued” after an hour from a height of 65 meters
Two teams of three climb the Ferris wheel, one from each side, in 45 minutes. The training assumption: the Ferris wheel is blocked and a person needs to be rescued from the top cart. After an hour, the “patient” ends up on the ground after being absorbed from a height of 65 meters.
Vienna is different, even when it comes to rope technicians
The STEG, which has existed since 1991, is 24 people strong. What sets Vienna apart from other cities with similar units: Up to half of the team works every day in ‘normal’ ambulances, spread throughout Vienna. At any time, one of them can be at the scene of an accident within minutes. If necessary, special vehicles with additional teams and heavy equipment will follow.
The STEG has already been applied for 161 times this year. Often in the event of accidents on construction sites, but also to rescue fallen hikers, mountain bikers or patients at home who cannot be transported via the stairs.
The tough STEG training takes two years, absolute fitness is just one of the requirements. A well-functioning brain is more important than any muscle during difficult missions, one of them said as he returned safely to the ground after climbing the Ferris wheel.
