A man in Sweden was convicted of sedition and given a suspended sentence for distributing a video showing the burning of a Quran.
The Linköping District Court said on Thursday that the video could clearly be interpreted as an expression of threats and contempt towards Muslims. The recording was specifically directed against Muslims and not against Islam as a religion.
In September 2020, the 27-year-old made and distributed a film in which a Quran and bacon were burned on a grill and then left in front of the entrance to a mosque. Music could be heard in the background of the recording, which the court found was clearly related to the 2019 mosque attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, which left 51 dead.
Man denied crime
According to news agency TT, this is the first case in which a Swedish court has investigated whether burning the Koran could constitute sedition. The man himself denied having committed a crime.
Diplomatic tensions
In 2023, individuals in Sweden and later Denmark burned copies of the Quran several times, sparking angry reactions among Muslims. All this caused a lot of diplomatic problems for the Scandinavian countries – including the Swedish embassy in the Iraqi capital was set on fire (see video above).
