After a 26-year-old jogger died in April, a total of seven bears were found dead in the forests of Trentino. The causes of her death are unknown. The last two carcasses were discovered in Trentino’s Val di Non valley, the province of Trento said, the Corriere del Trentino newspaper reported.
Experts want to determine the cause of death and clarify whether it was a natural death, an attack by other specimens or poaching. Currently no hypothesis is ruled out. The discovery of the last two carcasses sparked protests from animal rights activists.
Dead bears were sometimes noticeable
The other five bears were found dead in recent months. On April 21, the carcass of a young bear was discovered in Val di Sole. At the end of April, the bear, known by the code “M62”, was found dead not far from Lake Molveno. He had never attacked a human, although on several occasions he had approached and raided villages in search of food.
In early June, an adult specimen was found dead on Mount Pellier. Two days later, a bear carcass was discovered in the town of Cavedago. On September 27, the bear “F36” was found dead in the Bondone Valley, in the municipality of Sella Giudicarie. She should have been captured after slightly injuring two hikers during an encounter.
Animal rights activists: “Climate of hate”
Animal rights activists complained that a “climate of fear and hatred” had been created against bears in Trentino, fueling poaching. Animal protection organization Leidaa wants to file a lawsuit over the death of the last two found bears.
In Italy, since the death of the Trentino jogger, the debate about the coexistence of bears and humans has come to a head. Many people protested the original plans to kill “JJ4”, a so-called problem bear that was blamed for the jogger’s death and therefore captured. Animal rights activists repeatedly call for raising awareness about wildlife or establishing wildlife corridors.
