A girl, who was only eight years old, lost her mother in a Russian rocket attack on her house in Kiev. In the Caritas Children’s Protection Center in the Ukrainian capital, the small is currently protected and safety. But her future is uncertain – even that of the facility itself. Marie (name changed) was in her bed, around her cuddly toys, a small light that let her weigh in safety. It is a place of safety – the last refuge for children (now also for adults – the oldest resident is 85 years old) who have lost their house. “It is shared what is: food, clothing, warmth,” says Caritas director Klaus Schwertner. But the little one is in shock. Vera: “She recently woke up in the morning and thought: it was just a bad dream.”
