A lucky person in the US has won a lottery jackpot worth approximately $1.76 billion (€1.66 billion). The ticket with the correct five numbers 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 and the additional number 10 was submitted in the state of California, the operators of the Powerball lottery announced on Wednesday (local time). According to media reports, it was sold at a supermarket about 75 miles north of Los Angeles.
It is the second highest win in US lottery history. The largest jackpot to date was also won in California in November 2022: at that time it was worth $2.04 billion.
Profit must be taxed
Winnings are paid out in annual installments or immediately and are subject to tax. The full winnings are only available if paid out for a total of 30 annual installments. An immediate payout would amount to approximately $774 million – also before taxes.
The lottery is represented in 45 states, as well as the capital Washington, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The tickets cost two dollars. The odds of winning the jackpot were about 1 in 292 million.
