The head of the world’s largest cinema chain AMC says he has fallen victim to an attempted blackmail. A now convicted man threatened to spread false accusations about his private life, Adam Aron wrote on the online service X (Twitter) on Thursday.
Instead of giving in, he called in the authorities. “If someone with my access to resources doesn’t stand up to blackmail, who will?” says Aron. AMC owns the UCI cinemas.
“case closed”
At the request of the researchers, he only informed the AMC board after the court’s ruling in the case in July 2023, Aron explains. It was a purely private matter that has now been concluded.
News website Semafor on Thursday linked the case to the conviction of a New York woman arrested last year, citing people familiar with the case. According to the indictment, she tried to blackmail the head of a publicly traded company by threatening to publish intimate photos and messages of them. The victim’s name was not mentioned in the indictment at the time.
