The act caused an uproar: On Thursday evening, an Israeli flag hoisted in front of the old town hall in Linz was cut into pieces. Just one night later, the suspected perpetrators were arrested. They are two young Syrians (15 and 17 years old).
The two teenagers – both the 15-year-old and the 17-year-old were already known to the police – were tracked down on Friday evening by youth contact officers from the Linz police. They allegedly destroyed the Israeli flag just a few hours after it was flown at half-mast in front of Linz City Hall.
“Both have confessed,” state police spokesman David Furtner said. There is also material evidence: “Part of the flag was found on one of them.”
Perpetrators are being reported
“I am pleased that the Linz police were able to track down the two perpetrators very quickly,” said State Police Director Andreas Pilsl, who announced that both would be reported to the Public Prosecution Service. Pilsl speaks of a “clear sign that we will not tolerate anti-Semitism or hostility towards Israel here in Upper Austria.”
As reported, the flag in front of the city hall of the state capital was vandalized on Thursday evening. The city of Linz has already announced that it will provide a replacement.
