The US government released images on Friday showing hundreds of containers being transported by ship from North Korea to Russia. What should be in the containers? According to Washington, weapons and ammunition for the war in Ukraine.
According to the White House, more than a thousand containers were shipped from the North Korean port city of Rason to Dunai, Russia, between September 7 and October 1. The containers were then taken by train to an ammunition depot in southwestern Russia, the report said. The US government repeatedly releases targeted intelligence information regarding Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.
The U.S. leadership believes Pyongyang wants Moscow in exchange for advanced Russian weapons technologies to expand North Korea’s nuclear program, National Security Council communications director John Kirby said. It said ruler Kim Jong Un’s regime is likely to rely mainly on missiles, armored vehicles and ballistic missile production equipment. “We are closely monitoring whether Moscow will deliver these materials to Pyongyang,” Kirby continued.
Transports a few weeks after Kim’s visit
Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Kim to the Vostochny cosmodrome in the Russian Far East in September. It has not been officially announced whether agreements have been made regarding arms deliveries.
At the time, the US feared that Putin wanted to buy large quantities of artillery ammunition and missiles from North Korea to use in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. In return, Kim could hope for Russian technology to build satellites or nuclear submarines, it was said at the time.
