A winegrower from Bad Loipersdorf in Eastern Styria is missing five tons of Isabella grapes: they have simply been harvested. The damage amounts to several thousand euros! Recently there was a similar case in Vienna.
About three weeks ago, an unusual theft in Vienna’s vineyards made headlines: unknown perpetrators had secretly harvested and stolen several tons of grapes.
Now a similar case appears to be occurring in Styria. A company in Bad Loipersdorf in Eastern Styria is affected. “A few days ago my wife wanted to pick grapes to make jam. She came back empty-handed and said, ‘There is nothing left,'” farmer Hannes Pope told the ‘Krone’.
Rotten grapes got stuck
In fact, in a vineyard some distance from the farm, Isabella grapes had been fully harvested from approximately 0.3 hectares. “Someone was working professionally and left the green and rotten grapes hanging,” says Pope, who also runs a Buschenschank. Neither he nor the neighbors noticed anything.
After all, the unknown perpetrators must have been at work for a few hours. The winemaker estimates the yield of the secret harvest at around five tons – which would be worth around 7,500 euros. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” the farmer jokes, shaking his head at his loss.
After initial hesitation, Hannes Pope has now reported the incident: after all, the crime is not a trivial offense, but a serious theft.
