The Israeli army has once again called on civilians in the north of the Gaza Strip to flee to the south. A spokesperson has published two ‘safe’ escape routes. But there is resistance. Many people cannot leave the region.
The Israeli army has told people in the north of the Gaza Strip that there will be two safe routes along which they can move south between 10am and 4pm local time, which is until 3pm our time.
Two possible escape routes
The routes, one along the coast and one through the center of the Gaza Strip, were presented in a tweet by spokesman Avichay Adraee.
“For your safety, you should take advantage of the short time to head south,” the message said. On Friday, the Israeli army gave Gaza residents 24 hours to evacuate the north ahead of an expected ground operation.
People end up at a dead end
Due to a lack of fuel, electricity and poor internet connections, people in the Gaza Strip have little access to social media. Even those who head south hit a dead end. All border crossings are closed, emergency shelter is rare and shelters are virtually non-existent.
The management of Al-Awda Hospital, the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip, has so far refused to respond to the evacuation call. “We have patients who cannot be transferred and our staff consists of 35 doctors and support staff who insist on staying and providing services to the patients,” the hospital said in a statement.
The UN warns of a humanitarian catastrophe
The UN warned that the mass exodus order would have catastrophic consequences and called on Israel to reverse the order. The timeline was also criticized by international and humanitarian organizations as being too short for an evacuation.
Residents of the Gaza Strip are struggling to leave. The scenes on site are described as chaotic. Journalists on the scene report that panic is in the air. Some people simply cannot leave due to injuries and disabilities.
More and more civilian casualties
Israeli airstrikes have killed 324 Palestinians and injured a thousand in the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry in Gaza said on Saturday morning, Reuters reported.
The Israeli military suspects that Hamas members are in tunnels under people’s homes, as well as in residential buildings. The call for evacuation was sent in several ways. The Israeli army accused Hamas of trying to prevent the population from reaching safety and using them as a “human shield.”
