World Collector’s Day – Bees in danger: the buzzing threatens to stop

Date:

“If the bee dies, the man dies,” said the genius Albert Einstein – on World Day on Friday, the flying honey collectors are threatened as never before…

“Glyphosate is poisoning the world of vulnerable bees, but also that of many other animals,” says GLOBAL 2000 chemist Helmut Burtscher-Schaden, using World Day of Carnicas and their wild relatives as an opportunity to harshly criticize the EU.

As a reminder, in 2017, more than a million Europeans called for the pesticide to be banned. However, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) will keep the crop poison on the market for at least another year, potentially delaying the risk assessment on purpose.

Risk assessment postponed to next year
The outrage of conservationists is all too understandable. Because the approval of the pesticide should have ended on December 22 of this year. But Brussels has now postponed the necessary risk assessment until July 2023, undermining the promised ban. This is partly due to a move by the agricultural company Bayer, which had submitted a legally sophisticated application for renewed recognition.

Agricultural toxins must be removed from fields
Meanwhile, GLOBAL 2000 has blamed the new Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig: “The stuff should also be banned from local agriculture and viticulture.” Now, under the guise of food security, previously protected areas of biodiversity must be sacrificed to arable farming. The dreaded Varroa mite is also responsible for the high number of bee deaths.

In light of this, the savings “Bee Council”, committed to “saving diversity”, cannot be overstated. Gripping example: Valuable organic apple products from Blühwiesen are currently being offered.

Bees irreplaceable for ecosystem
Bees are irreplaceable little helpers for our Earth’s ecosystem. Because the pollination of a large part of the plants ensures the richness of the food chain. The genius Albert Einstein is already credited with the quote: “If the bee dies, man dies…”

Many helpers show heart
More and more companies are copying the “crown” – and keeping bees on the roof. So does the construction giant Porr. With 470 hives at 50 locations, in addition to building, you have also gained a lot of knowledge about beekeeping.

Markus Hoyos, who takes care of Rosenburg Castle and its fields and forests in the Waldviertel, has been a supporter of the “We for Bees” campaign from the outset, launched by Lower Austrian County Councilor Stefan Pernkopf. They find plenty of nectar in organic flowering areas.

20 biological bee colonies are now part of Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner’s “troop” on the grounds of the Maria Theresa barracks in Vienna. And in the heart of Vienna, 280,000 bees swarm from the roof of the shopping center “The Mall” for the benefit of the “Children’s Dream Foundation”.
